FROM DETROIT TO PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE: PEARL TAKES THE NEXT STEP

Women and Words 2026

What began as a story about an unopened letter in a grandmother's Hope Chest has opened an extraordinary new door for Detroit author Rhonda Welsh.

Welsh was among just 70 women selected from thousands of applicants to participate in Women & Words 2026, an initiative of Storehouse Voices, an imprint of Penguin Random House, the world's largest trade book publisher.

Held in New York City on October 16, the event brought together emerging women writers and publishing professionals for a day of literary conversations, professional development, and meaningful connections.

Welsh attended with her debut novel, Pearl, a multigenerational work of upmarket book club fiction exploring family, identity, inherited trauma, and healing.

During the event, Welsh participated in individual conversations with two publishing editors, including Chelcee Johns of Storehouse Voices, who expressed enthusiasm for Pearl and requested a copy of the novel.

The experience also offered valuable insight into the next phase of the book's journey: building a visible, engaged community of readers.

For Welsh, whose love of literature began in early childhood, the invitation represented a remarkable moment of affirmation.

But the story is far from finished.

Over the coming months, Crimson Kairos will focus on expanding Pearl's readership through book clubs, literary events, community partnerships, reader reviews, and conversations about the novel's enduring themes.

And readers have an important role to play.

Every purchase, honest review, book club invitation, and personal recommendation helps demonstrate the audience for Pearl and the stories it represents.

The journey that began in Detroit has reached the halls of Penguin Random House. Where it leads next remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Pearl is finding her way into the world.

Be part of the next chapter. Visit the Crimson Kairos Store to purchase Pearl or share your review.
