PEARL

The debut novel by Rhonda Welsh

When Rae opens a long-forgotten Hope Chest, she finds an unopened letter from a Georgia asylum that reveals secrets about a great-grandmother that no one discussed

The book follows four generations within a family.  The ethereal Eliza rows off a Georgia Sea Island with her baby to escape a cruel marriage. That baby, Pearline, grows up ashamed of her Geechee blood and finally find true love when she is sixty-one. Pearline’s daughter, the responsible Mae Ruth, marries only to take part in the Great Migration to Detroit. Mae Ruth’s quirky daughter Rae, divorced, childless and finally in therapy, must decide whether the wounds she inherited get to be the whole story.

Warm, funny and hopeful, Pearl is a story that refuses to end in trauma.
